Top Twelve Songs About Travel

A good playlist can be just what you need when you're setting out on a long adventure. When I'm at home, I like slow jazz or good piano music, but when I'm hitting the road, I want to feel inspired! Songs about travel put me in the mood for a long trip.

I've put together a list of my favorite travel songs to help you get inspired, too!

Without further ado, I present Caroline's Top Twelve Songs About Travel:

12. Whitesnake, "Here I Go Again"

"Here I go again on my own
Goin' down the only road I've ever known,
Like a drifter I was born to walk alone
And I've made up my mind,
I ain't wasting no more time."

Travel can be a great healer. But sometimes, travel is lonely. Whitesnake captures that perfectly in this 80s classic. If you've ever run from any hurt by hitting the road, this song is for you.

11. Carla Bruni, "You Belong to Me"

"See the Pyramids
Along the Nile
Watch the sun rise
On a tropic isle
Just remember darling
All the while
You belong to me."

Have an adventurer in your life? Sometimes it can be hard sitting at home while someone you love is off seeing new things sans you. Bruni captures the plaintiveness of waiting at home in "You Belong to Me," reminding us that while there are sights to see, there might just be someone back home thinking about you while you do.

10. Styx, "Come Sail Away"

"I'm sailing away,
Set an open course for the virgin sea,
'Cause I've got to be free,
Free to face the life that's ahead of me,
On board, I'm the captain, so climb aboard,
We'll search for tomorrow on every shore,
And I'll try, oh Lord I'll try ... to carry on."

You ARE the captain of you own adventures. Sing on, Styx.

9. Lulu and the Lampshades, "You're Gonna Miss Me (Cups)"

"I got my ticket for the long way round
The one with the prettiest of views
It's got mountains, it's got rivers
Its got sights to give you shivers
But it sure would be prettier with you."

Made famous by Anna Kendrick in Pitch Perfect, this longer (and in my opinion, better) version is still a cover. The song is old! And yet, it speaks to something in all of us that want love, but need it on our terms. Come with me, it says, because I have to go.

8. Toby Keith, "Good to Go to Mexico"

"Baby if you’re good to go,
We’ll go down to Mexico
And get a place in Cabo,

Kick back in the sand
It’ll be just you and me and the moonlight dancing on the sea
To the Spanish guitar melody of a mariachi band."

We all know that winter weariness. Migrate to warmer climes, Keith suggests. The snappy tempo and mariachi notes make this a delightful song to cheer you on your way. You'll want to get up and dance all the way to your destination!

7. Sarah Darling, "Little Umbrellas"

"Killing little umbrellas,
Watching his memory fade
A little change in the weather,
Sailing on a wind and wave.
It makes you feel better
Drinking up the tropical sun,
Soaking up the coconut rum,
Killing little umbrellas."

The perfect revenge is a trip to Cabo.

6. John Denver, "Leaving on a Jet Plane"

"So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go
'Cause I'm leavin' on a jet plane
Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh baby, I hate to go."

Leaving can be hard. John Denver understands. The foil to Bruni's waiting, "Leaving on a Jet Plane" captures the feeling of kissing loved ones goodbye as you embark on a new journey: a little heartsore.

5. The Beach Boys, "Kokomo"

"Afternoon delight
cocktails and moonlit nights
That dreamy look in your eye
Give me a tropical contact high
Way down in Kokomo."

This classic take on paradise-travel from the Beach Boys is perfect to hear en route to a tropical island destination.

4. Mark Knopfler, "Do America."

"Take the 777 to the USA
Gonna party all night, I'm gonna sleep all day
See New York City 'cause I've never been
New York City in a limousine
Gonna do America, do do America
Do America, do do America now."

Guess what? The Bahamas are nice, but there are some pretty great things to see in America, too. Knopfler celebrates domestic travel in the peppy "Do America." It'll inspire you to see the States!

3. Willie Nelson, "On the Road Again"

"On the road again
Goin' places that I've never been.
Seein' things that I may never see again
And I can't wait to get on the road again."

What I really love about Nelson is the plaintive quality of his voice — in my opinion, Willie does sad — well. But no one can accuse this song of sadness. It's a love song about his lifestyle,  and Nelson's upbeat, happy tone reveals his pleasure in the road. It's perfect as a picker-upper.

2. The Allman Brothers, "Ramblin' Man"

"Lord, I was born a ramblin' man
Tryin' to make a livin' and doin' the best I can
And when it's time for leavin'
I hope you'll understand
That I was born a ramblin' man."

The Allman brothers don't feel remorse straying from the homestead; instead, they embrace life on the road as their destiny in this celebration of "ramblin."

1. Norah Jones, "The Long Way Home"

"Money's just something you throw
Off the back of a train
Got a handful of lightening
A hat full of rain
And I know that I said
I'd never do it again
And I love you, pretty baby, but I always take the long way home."

I know the Tom Waits version is a classic — but I can't square with Waits' gravelly voice. This song is so much better in Jones' smooth, jazzy one. Sometimes, it's the journey, but sometimes, it's the destination... And like all great songs about travel, it's a love song.

What do YOU listen to when you travel?
