A New Life

I've been less-than-good about updating you on everything that's happened. I've eaten at some fascinating restaurants, taken a few day trips, and seen some cool things since the last time I posted.

And I moved to Austin, Texas with Willie, starting a new chapter. The restaurants are many and the entertainment never-ending. I look forward to telling you all about it.

Until next time.... Love,

Caroline

Four Years of Monster

I've been so busy I forgot to celebrate, but November marked four years with Beastie. I couldn't love her more if I tried, and we've definitely had ups and downs, but I wouldn't trade her for anything. Tonight she's getting a giant hamburger and a new chewy.

Also: she's still a service dog. She keeps me from going bonkers.

Restaurant Review: Katharine and Co. in Beaumont, TX

Hi, world. Caroline here.  Are you in the mood for a food-related bliss-spiral? Because you know I'm always up for that.

Well, get ready. Katharine and Company in Beaumont is bringing the bliss.

See that? That is a pork tenderloin sandwich on house focaccia with a curry mayo. (That curry mayo is just to die for.

But don't do anything drastic — you'll want to stick around for sides and dessert.

Remember that lime soup I had in Mexico? I wrote about it here and here. Well, they serve it. Which is awesome, because I love to eat it, and I hate doing dishes after I make it. Katharine and Co.'s version is  completely delicious and served with fresh avocado slices. Really, buying it was a win-win.

I also had a Greek salad, which was beautifully plated and featured vibrant fresh vegetables that totally made me not care about eating rabbit food. Just kidding. It was delicious.

The first time I ever experienced the wonder that is Katherine and Co. food was probably a year or so ago at the Beaumont Farmer's Market, where I had a raspberry bar and Mom, my Saturday-morning brunch date, had a slice of breakfast casserole that sent us into a frenzy of internet stalking. Of course the restaurant, located at 1495 Calder Ave.,  was our go-to destination for her birthday lunch this year.

The birthday girl
I'm happy to report that everything I tried, including my food and everyone else's, was light fare beyond reproach. The prices are reasonably midrange (about $10 - $15) and I found it well worth a lunch that didn't leave me feeling too guilty about my calorie count.

You can find the menu here. Next time you're in the SETX area, check it out!

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Concert, A La The Toyota Center

Greetings from Houston, Texas... from last Thursday.

OOOooooeeeeeeeoooooOO.

(Disclaimer: I am not actually writing this entry from the past. I was just too busy to update before now. )

Why was I in Houston, you ask?

Two words, baby: Live. Music.

Before the show

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Steve Windward were playing a show, and Dad was craving a heady dose of nostalgia. We bought tickets and off we went (after a stop by Chuy's for cheap margs, of course).

It was a really good show and we both enjoyed ourselves. "That is a man who knows how to be a rockstar," Dad said. Predictably, 90% of the audience videoed "Free Fallin."

After they had played and trooped off the stage, the audience called for an encore. Mostly by waving their cellphones in the air. I wonder what the band thought about the encroachment of modern technology. At least the cellphones were less likely to set off the smoke detectors than lighters.

GRE, sick puppies and sick Caroline

I haven't put on shoes in 5 days or so... Willie and I are both sick, sick, sick. She's in the throes of an allergic reaction, and I think I caught the flu. I'm achy and coughing. I'm going to go lay on the couch some more. Adventures later... much later. The vet and Tylenol today.

And I'm studying for the GRE. That is as exciting as it sounds.

Caroline and Co. in sombreros...

I have nothing for you today. Please enjoy these photos of my friends and me in sombreros as a sort of apology.

(But really, no one should apologize for sombreros. They're too fun.)

Even Chris's MawMaw joined in.
